Information
Request/Subject
Approval of Memorandum of Agreements between Copper Corridor Blight Buster Coalition and Gila County approving Gila County as the lead agency for the Environmental Protection Agency Brownfields Grant.
Background Information
In 2020 Gila County partnered with the communities of Superior, Winkelman, Globe, Miami, and Pinal County to form the Copper Corridor Blight Buster Coalition with Gila County as the lead agency. The Coalition, with Gila County as the lead, applied for an EPA Brownfields Grant in the amount of $600,000. The grant was awarded in May 2021.
Evaluation
Grant funding will allow the Coalition to identify and assess Brownfield sites along with prime commercial and industrial corridors and will support the long-term individual community plans to revitalize neighborhoods and the economy. Creating useable properties will complement the existing efforts already set forth and encourage much-needed reinvestment, economic development, and job creation opportunities. The Memorandum of Agreements will formalize the Copper Corridor Blight Buster Coalition and grant permission for Gila County to act as the lead agency from October 1, 2021, to October 31, 2024.
Conclusion
The Board's approval to enter into the Memorandum of Agreements with the Coalition members of Globe, Miami, Superior, Winkelman, and Pinal County will allow Gila County to act as the lead agency and will provide the Coalition communities the funding and opportunity to identify and assess Brownfield sites from October 1, 2021, to October 31, 2024.
Recommendation
Staff recommends that the Board approve the Memorandum of Agreements with the Copper Corridor Blight Buster Coalition communities approving Gila County as the lead agency.
