Request/Subject

Adopt Resolution No. 22-08-03 which authorizes the execution of an Intergovernmental Agreement No. 21-0008387-I with the Arizona Department of Transportation for the Calle De Loma Railroad Crossing Improvements.

Background Information

In 2010 Calle De Loma railway crossing was on one of the top lists for improvement. When the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) personnel came to visit all of the railway sights in Gila County, it was determined that the Bixby railway crossing would take precedence. Since then, Federal funding has come about, and now the State Arizona Department of Transportation, a Federal-aid package, and Arizona Eastern Railroad will fund this improvement project. Gila County will not have to pay unless changes are made to benefit the County.

Evaluation

The improvements will be to raise the tracks, eliminate one track, and install a concrete surface. Installation of automatic warning signals, automatic gate arms, pavement markings, and other railings crossing-related appurtenance will be done during this project. After completion of the Calle De Loma crossing project, the County will continue to maintain the roadway and the railroad will continue to maintain the crossing.

Conclusion

This safety improvement will be in compliance with all railway crossings in Arizona. The residents will have better access on Calle De Loma in Claypool to their homes at no cost to the County.

Recommendation

The Public Works Department Director and staff recommend the Board of Supervisors adopt Resolution No. 22-08-03 authorizing the execution of the Arizona Department of Transportation Intergovernmental Agreement No. 21-0008387-I for the Calle De Loma Rail-Highway Safety Improvements.
