FY 2021 Appointment of a new Superior Court Judge Pro Tempore.

Background Information

The Court is authorized, with approval from the Gila County Board of Supervisors and upon appointment by the Arizona Supreme Court, to employ Superior Court Judges Pro Tempore in the management of judicial operations. Further, the Court is required to conduct a selection process for special judicial officers. Upon the announcement of the retirement of the Hon. Gary V. Scales, which will be effective June 30, 2020, the Superior Court underwent the selection process for a replacement Judge. Ultimately, David E. Wolak emerged as the recommended candidate. Mr. Wolak would serve for the period of July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021. Funds for the position have been included in the Court's budget and this particular Judge Pro Tempore also qualifies as the Family Law Commissioner thus entitling the County to reimbursement in child support actions.

Evaluation

The Superior Court operates with two elected, divisional judges and one full time Judge Pro Tempore operating as another division. The Judge Pro Tempore position is required to continue with effective and timely case management.

Conclusion

The Court requires Board of Supervisors’ approval for the appointment of Mr. David E. Wolak to serve as Superior Court Judge Pro Tempore for the period of July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021.

Recommendation

The Court respectfully recommends that the Board of Supervisors approve Presiding Judge Timothy M. Wright’s request for the appointment of Mr. David E. Wolak as Judge Pro Tempore for the period stated above.
