Approval of Gila River Indian Community electronic FY2020 grant application submission for National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). |
Background Information |
NAMI Payson's mission is to improve the lives of those affected by mental illness through advocacy, education and support. NAMI is a non-profit organization serving Northern Arizona including Pine, Strawberry, Payson, Star Valley, Tonto Apache Indian Community and surrounding communities. The deadline to submit the FY2020 Grant Application to the Gila River Indian Community was April 3, at 5:00 pm. The grant application that was electronically submitted on April 3, 2020, NAMI is requesting $28,350 for funding to provide professionally developed trainings and outreach for caregivers on understanding mental illness in children, teens, families, peer to peer, and instructor trainings. Under the tribal gaming compacts, tribes with casinos contribute 1 to 8% of their gaming revenue each year to the state, cities, towns, and counties. The contribution is determined on a sliding scale based on the amount of gaming revenue. 12% is distributed by the tribe to cities, towns, and counties of their choosing for community services and public safety programs for local government. |
Evaluation |
If the Gila River Indian Community Gaming Grant is awarded in whole or in part, NAMI will use the funds for the trainings and outreach described in the application packet and be responsible for reporting on the expense of the funds. Gila County will be involved as the pass-through entity for the funds only. |
Conclusion |
NAMI is requesting assistance from the Gila River Indian Community in the amount of $28,350 to provide outreach, training, and education for caregivers, volunteers, peers and families on mental illness. The electronic submission deadline for the grant application was April 3, 2020, at 5:00 pm. If a grant is awarded, the award will be brought back to the Board for acceptance. NAMI will be responsible for expending the funds for training and education purposes and all grant reporting to the Gila River Indian Community. Gila County will act as the pass-through entity to receive the grant funds. |
Recommendation |
Staff recommends the Board of Supervisors' approval the electronic submission of a Grant Application to the Gila River Indian Community on April 3, 2020, in the amount of $28,350 and, if awarded, it will be used by NAMI to provide training and education on mental illness. |
