Adoption of Proclamation 2016-05 proclaiming October 2016 as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in Gila County.

Background Information

The Board of Supervisors for many years has adopted a proclamation to declare the month of October as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in Gila County. The request each year usually comes from Carolyn Gillis, Program Supervisor for the Gila County Safe Home.

Evaluation

Domestic violence is a major social crisis in our society and all Arizonans are affected by domestic violence directly or indirectly. Domestic violence affects every child and adult in Gila County as a victim/survivor or as a family member, significant other, neighbor or co-worker of a victim/survivor.

Conclusion

The Gila County Board of Supervisors recognizes the importance of designating a time devoted to increase the general public's awareness and support of agencies providing services to domestic violence victims and perpetrators.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors receive an update on the activities of the Gila County Safe Home as this agency provides services to victims of domestic violence within Gila County. It would be beneficial for this agency to receive a proclamation from the Board of Supervisors which proclaims the month of October as "Domestic Violence Awareness Month" in Gila County.
