Request/Subject

Adoption of Resolution No. 11-08-07 in support of Arizona Forest Restoration Products Inc.

Background Information
Gila County has experienced degraded forest and watershed health conditions over the past several decades, most significantly represented by large, unnaturally severe fires all due to the extreme overgrowth of national forests that are located within northern Arizona.
Evaluation
The vision of Arizona Forest Restoration Products Inc. (AZFRP) is to create an economic engine that can fund the landscape scale restoration of northern Arizona's forests to a fire-adapted ecology by converting low-value, small diameter trees harvested during ecological restorative thinning into high value engineered wood products.

AZFRP has been a stakeholder in the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) since its conception.  The proposals included in 4FRI will enhance the ecological and economic health of northern Arizona's forests and provide innumerable benefits to northern Arizona's communities, including protection from unnaturally severe wildfires, as well as jobs and sustained economic revenue.
Conclusion

By the Board of Supervisors adopting Resolution No. 11-08-07, it would show Gila County's support of AZFRP as a trusted industry partner in its bid for one large-scale, long-term restoration contract totaling 30,000 acres per year over the next 10 years, and a request that the U.S. Forest Service give diligent consideration to AZFRP's application for the 4FRI contract.

By the Board of Supervisors adopting Resolution No. 11-08-07, it is not intended to be an exclusive endorsement, but rather an acknowledgement that AZFRP meets the standards and criteria that Gila County expects in a bidder for the Four Forest Restoration Initiative (4FRI) contract.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors adopt Resolution No. 11-08-07.

Suggested Motion
Information/Discussion/Action to adopt Resolution No. 11-08-07 in support of Arizona Forest Restoration Products' bid to secure a large-scale restoration contract through the Four Forest Restoration Initiative.  (Don McDaniel)
