Cobre Valley Center for the Arts' Economic Development Grant Request

Background Information

The Cobre Valley Center for the Arts (CVCA) was formed in 1984 as a non-profit organization. For many years CVCA has acted as an informal visitor center and it has sought to promote tourism, economic development and community development in the southern region of Gila County.

Paul Tunis, CVCA Director, requested to make a presentation to the Board of Supervisors to present a proposal for the Board to partner with CVCA to help promote economic development by bolstering the CVCA as a Visitor Center.

Evaluation

Mr. Tunis would like to present a proposal for the Board's consideration which contains various levels of partnership, as follows:

Tier 1 - Increasing Open Hours at the CVCA Visitor Center - Investment: $8,000

Tier 2 - Improve Signage of CVCA Visitor Center - Investment: $3,900

Tier 3 - Direct Tourists to CVCA Visitor Center - Investment: Variable

Conclusion

It would be beneficial for the Board and the public to be informed of the activities of the CVCA and for the Board to consider a request to provide an economic development grant to CVCA which will be used to establish the CVCA as a Visitor Center.

Recommendation

If the Board chooses to partner with the CVCA, it shall direct staff to prepare a written agreement outlining the terms of said funding which will be presented to the Board for action at a future meeting.

Suggested Motion

Information/Discussion to consider a request to provide an economic development grant to the Cobre Valley Center of the Arts (CVCA) whereby the CVCA would become a Visitor Center to further promote tourism, economic development and community development in the southern region of Gila County.
