Acknowledgement of Special Elections official results for Miami Unified School District No. 40 and Payson Unified School District No. 10 November 5, 2019, Budget Override Measures.

Background Information

The Gila County School Superintendent called for the Special Elections on November 5, 2019, in order to seek voter approval for additional authorization to exceed the maintenance and operation budget limit by 10% of the revenue control limit to fund existing programs in Miami Unified School District No. 40 and Payson Unified School District No. 10.

Evaluation

A.R.S. § 15-426 states, "The county school superintendent and the chairman of the board of supervisors shall meet within thirty days, unless otherwise specified in this title, following the date of any school election and canvass the returns in accordance with procedures for the canvass of returns in a general election. The county school superintendent shall declare the results of the election, shall declare elected the person receiving the highest number of votes for each office to be filled, and shall issue to him a certificate of election."

Conclusion

On November 19, 2019, Roy Sandoval, Gila County School Superintendent, met with Woody Cline, Chairman of the Gila County Board of Supervisors, at which time they canvassed the returns of the November 5, 2019, Special Elections to consider a budget override measure for Miami Unified School District No. 40 and Payson Unified School District No. 10.

The budget override measure for Miami Unified School District No. 40 passed with 71.92% votes in favor. The budget override measure for Payson Unified School District No. 10 passed with 61.32% votes in favor. On November 20, 2019, Mr. Sandoval declared the results of the elections official and he would like the Board of Supervisors to acknowledge the Special Elections official results.

Recommendation

Mr. Sandoval recommends that the Gila County Board of Supervisors acknowledge the official results for the November 5, 2019, Special Elections for Miami Unified School District No. 40 and Payson Unified School District No. 10 budget override measures.
