Gila County 1/2 Cent Transportation Excise Tax Extension Election

Background Information

The current 1/2 Cent Transportation Excise Tax was approved by the voters in 1994 and expires December 31, 2014.

Evaluation

The 1/2 Cent Transportation Tax has been vital in providing necessary funds to supplement the Highway User Revenue Funds (HURF) in Gila County.

The Board of Supervisors will want to consider placing the extension of the tax on the ballot for November 2014 Election.

Conclusion

The extension of the this tax for another 20 years is critical to the continued success of the highway and roadway maintenance and improvement program in Gila County.

A citizens' committee should be formed to explore the need to continue the tax and make a recommendation regarding holding an election to get voter approval.

An election of this nature is very complex and will require the assistance of a consultant and an attorney.

Recommendation

Staff recommends the establishment of a citizens' committee by the Board of Supervisors and the hiring of a consultant and attorney by staff to explore the advisability and approach for holding an election in November 2014 to get voter approval to extend the 1/2 Cent Transportation Excise Tax for an additional 20 years.

Information/Discussion regarding establishing a citizens' committee, hiring a consultant and attorney, and holding an election in November 2014 for the extension of the 1/2 Cent Transportation Excise Tax for an additional 20 years.
