Adoption of Proclamation No. 10-09 proclaiming October 2010 as "Disability Awareness Month" in Gila County.

Background Information

In order to ensure the full inclusion of people with disabilities into society, it is necessary to expand the public's knowledge, awareness and understanding of the history of people with disabilities and the disability rights movment, which is a civil rights movement that is an important part of the history of this state and this country.

Evaluation

There is a need to include instruction on disability history, people with disabilities and the disability rights movement into the existing public school curriculum and community as a whole. There is also a need to increase the awareness and understanding of the history and contributions of people with disabilities in this county, state, nation and world by designating the annual observance of October as "Disability Awareness Month" in Gila County.

Conclusion

Because October is recognized nationally as "Disability Awareness Month," it is being recommended that Gila County do likewise.

Recommendation

It is recommended that the Board of Supervisors adopt Proclamation No. 09-04 in support of proclaiming October 2010 as "Disability Awareness Month" in Gila County.
