Request/Subject

Accept Governor Janice K. Brewer's proclamation for the November 2, 2010, General Election and set the publication date for the proclamation of October 20, 2010.

Background Information

Section 16-214, Arizona Revised Statutes, provides that at least thirty days before a general election, the Governor shall issue a proclamation containing a statement of the time of election, the offices to be filled, and shall transmit a copy of the election proclamation to the officer in charge of elections of the several counties.

Evaluation

Prior to each General Election, the Gila County Elections Director presents the Board of Supervisors with notification that she has received the Governor's proclamation proclaiming the General Election for that particular year.

Conclusion

Gila County has received an email notification from the Assistant State Election Director of the Arizona Secretary of State's Office that an official copy of the Governor's proclamation has been mailed to Gila County. The officer in charge of elections, who is Linda Eastlick, Elections Director, per statutory requirement must notify the Board of Supervisors about receipt of the proclamation, and within 5 days after its receipt the Board shall meet and publish a copy of the proclamation in an official newspaper of the county at least 10 days before the General Election. Ms. Eastlick is placing this item on the Board's consent agenda to fulfill the requirements of ARS 16-214. She will handle the responsibility of publishing the proclamation in both English and Spanish in the official newspaper of the County, which for 2010 is the Arizona Silver Belt. The publication will appear in the October 20, 2010, edition of the newspaper.

Recommendation

The Elections Director recommends the Board's acceptance of the Governor's proclamation.
