Election of a Chairman of the Board of Supervisors

Background Information

On August 19, 2019, the Board of Supervisors elected Supervisor Woody Cline as its Chairman and Supervisor Tommie Martin as its Vice-Chairman for a 16-month term as agreed to by the Board members. Supervisor Cline's term as Chairman ends on December 31, 2020. The Honorable Tommie Cline Martin, District 1 Supervisor, was scheduled to be elected as Chairman for the following 16-month term to begin on January 1, 2021; however, she passed away on December 10, 2020. The Board of Supervisors is currently looking for a replacement to fill Supervisor Martin's unexpired term of office as she was re-elected for another 4-year term of office.

Evaluation

It is necessary for the Board to elect a new Chairman of the Board of Supervisors for 16 months; from January 1, 2021, to April 30, 2022. The Board will elect its Vice-Chairman when a new Supervisor has been seated.

It would be advantageous if the new Chairman could begin his term of office after the January 5, 2021 Board of Supervisors' Regular Meeting, which is the first scheduled meeting of 2021 because all documents to be signed include Chairman Cline's name as the Chairman.

Conclusion

It is appropriate for the Board of Supervisors to elect a Chairman to begin office immediately after the January 5, 2021 Board of Supervisors' Regular Meeting which will provide elected offices and County departments ample time to change the Chairman's name on all future documents to be presented to the Board for approval.
